If you’re someone that wants to be a journalist in the nearby following years, than you and I are alike. Hopefully if you have done research on the brutal career you haven’t been scared away. It sounds really tough, but a lot of journalists claim that it is very rewarding, not in terms of money though. But hopefully you are not willing to sacrifice your life for an extra bulky paycheck, it’s not worth it.
The Industry has made it quite obvious that journalism is tough, so today I am going to focus on the positive inspirational aspects of the career.
In journalism, you can recreate stories using words, graphics, photos, and creative designs. There is a lot of freedom in writing, which means you have tons of choices. “I realized sometime in college that going into journalism meant I’d essentially be paid to learn new things, and then to share those learnings with others. What could be better?”–Link
“I’m still a passionate journalist because I believe in the power of the media to affect positive change in society. Journalists play a vital role in that change as watchdogs, but — even more importantly — our stories and photographs influence how people in society view one another.”
“In addition to day by day gathering facts and tidbits that eventually will turn into a story, I love the spontaneity of this job. I often come to the office expecting to spend the day working on one thing, but then something breaking happens and I am the reporter assigned to tackle the story.”
“As a child, that was my standard reply to adult inquiries about what I wanted to be when I grew up. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a journalist, so perhaps I was born with all the ingredients: Passion for reading. Passion for language. Passion for truth. Passion to make a difference. Curiosity bordering on nosiness.”
“As a reporter, I’m never sure what I will be doing on any given day. Yet I do know that I will be able to play some role in shaping my newspaper’s coverage and in changing the lives of the many people who live here.”
“But mostly I’ve been changed by having to negotiate, day in and day out, with people whose values are different from mine. When you articulate your principles and listen to others’, you broaden your perspective and become a better journalist.“
“For newspapers, trust is difficult to build but easy to lose. We need to earn that trust every day from loyal readers and, more importantly, from those who have not yet found a reason to pick up the paper.”
“Being a journalist is a lot of fun. You get to meet a lot of new people, eat a lot of free food, and everyone has to be nice and say flattering things to you no matter how they really feel. In fact, it is a lot like being in a wedding, except you have don’t get to fool around at the end (usually) and then you have to write about it.” –Link
